The Work
Someone has to know what equipment exists, where it lives, and when it needs replacing. I maintain the inventory for laptops, peripherals, and the kit that keeps an organization running. I coordinate with vendors on orders and deliveries, follow up when something goes missing, and provide technical input when procurement needs to make budget decisions.
Why It Matters
Without good asset tracking, you end up buying duplicates, losing track of who has what, and discovering forgotten equipment in storage rooms months later. Plus, when someone leaves, you need to know exactly which device is theirs and where it goes.
Getting asset management wrong also creates security headaches - abandoned laptops or unlocked equipment that should’ve been decommissioned. And it wastes money on unnecessary purchases because nobody knows what you already own.
What I’ve Learned
Good inventory saves money, full stop. It also saves time when a user says “my laptop” and you need to know which serial number they mean. I’ve learned that the difference between “on order” and “forgotten” is usually a timely follow-up email. Asset lifecycle management requires staying on top of vendors and keeping records current through the whole lifespan from purchase to decommission.
